Anbernic RG477 V - A very powerful vertical handheld.

Most important features

You may know Anbernic from its cheaper retro handhelds, which emulate fine games on the level of the Nintendo 64 and below. But the Anbernic RG477 V effortlessly takes you a step further: this is truly a premium system. The retro handheld features a spacious and square 4.7-inch display, equipped with a high resolution of 1280 by 960 pixels. This allows you to perfectly upscale the image quality and resolution of both Nintendo GameCube, Wii and PlayStation 2 twice, without losing quality. The chipset, the MediaTek Dimensity 8300, may have more going for it - but if you don't make use of its full potential, you get access to longer battery life. After all, the less you ask of such a handheld, the more energy-efficient it can operate.

Why this model is special

Moreover, you won't pay too much for the Anbernic RG477 V, as you can buy it in two configurations. The base model has 8 GB of working memory and 128 GB of internal storage, so you may well not even need an extra microSD card. There is also a 12+ 256 GB variant available, which has the bottom end. No retro machine will be too much for it then, and even with the bigger games of later generations, you should have enough space left over for all your favourite games of yesteryear.

Briefly again. You choose..

  • for the basic model if you are less demanding, looking for a fine retro handheld and don't intend to be constantly gaming at the highest level;
  • for the Pro model if you like to get the most out of your hardware, don't want to compromise on performance and design, and want to be assured of stable frame rates no matter what games you will be playing on it.

In both cases, you can play sixth-generation games on these. In this case, we mean the GameCube and PlayStation 2 (and Xbox, once there is a good Android emulator for those). Wii games will also run pleasantly on this, as that is basically a souped-up GameCube. In addition, Nintendo 3DS titles will also work on this, but you might have to switch displays manually sometimes. No problem, as that can be done via a good emulator with a single button press. Of course, the consoles and handhelds that came out earlier work perfectly on this.

Furthermore, you are assured of a good software environment with Android 14 on board and you can rely on stable wireless connectivity with bluetooth 5.3 (for when you want to connect an external controller to this) and Wi-Fi 6E (for when you want to stream cloud or PC games on this). You can also connect the system to a TV or monitor and use the handheld as a kind of portable console. Charging is simply via USB-C, so you don't need to invest in a separate charger. The one from your smartphone will just work with this. The battery has an output of a whopping 5500 mAh, lasting around eight hours (depending on the games you play).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 8 GB and 12 GB models?

Both models basically perform at the same level, but not in the same quality. The variant with more working memory offers extra leeway for heavier or smoother emulation, multitasking, AI functions and future use. For everything up to PlayStation 2, 8 GB of working memory is more than enough in any case.

What systems can this handheld handle?

Everything up to PlayStation 2 runs just fine, and it is very compatible with Wii and 3DS games. This makes the Anbernic RG477 V suitable as a kind of all-in-one system.

*Can I connect the Anbernic RG477 V to a TV or monitor?

Yes, via USB-C with DisplayPort you play up to 1080p on an external screen. If you pair a controller via Bluetooth, it acts as a kind of portable game console.

Can I turn off the RGB lighting on the sticks?

Yes. Not only do you control the colour or intensity of the LED lights around the sticks, you can simply choose to switch them off completely if this is not your thing.

Is the screen suitable for retro pixel art?

Absolutely. The 4:3 screen ratio (aspect ratio) and high resolution ensure that pixel art is displayed sharply and uncompromisingly.

Can I connect multiple controllers?

Yes, via Bluetooth 5.3, you can easily pair additional controllers. This way, you can even play multiplayer games with others if you want, but you have to set up those controllers properly via the emulator you are currently using.
